  1. Hayes Online Reference and Driver Disk
  2.  
  3. This disk contains the Online Reference Guide for your
  4. modem and Windows 95 drivers for certain Hayes modems.
  5.  
  6. 1)  Reference Guide
  7.     -------------------------
  8.  
  9.     To install the Online Reference Guide, simply select
  10.     the file   SETUP.EXE    from the Windows file manager
  11.     and double-click with the mouse to run this file.
  12.     This will install the Hayes Online Reference manual
  13.     on your system to provide you easy quick access to
  14.     detailed information about your new Hayes modem.

  17. 2)  Driver Disk
  18.     -------------------------
  19.  
  20.     Most Hayes modems have drivers included with the latest
  21.     operating systems.  Windows 95 is being updated regularly
  22.     with new drivers.  If your Hayes modem is not listed in
  23.     the Windows 95 modem list this disk may contain a new
  24.     modem driver available for your modem.  To install the
  25.     Hayes OPTIMA Business Modem with Windows 95, use the
  26.     following instructions:

  28.     From the   START   button in Windows 95
  29.     A) Select
  30.         SETTINGS
  31.         CONTROL PANEL
  32.         ADD NEW HARDWARE
  33.         NEXT
  34.        When prompted with "Do you want Windows to search for
  35.        new hardware?"
  36.     B) Select
  37.         No
  38.         NEXT
  39.     C) Select
  40.         Modem
  41.         NEXT
  42.     D) Select
  43.        "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list"
  44.         Next
  45.     E) Select
  46.         HAVE DISK
  47.        Insert the Hayes driver disk in the appropriate floppy drive
  48.     F) Select
  49.         OK
  50.        Choose your modem from the list
  51.        NOTE:  If you do not have a Hayes Enhanced Serial Port do NOT
  52.               select the driver "Hayes Optima 288 V.34 + FAX + VOICE
  53.               with ESP Card"
  54.     G) Select
  55.         NEXT
  56.        Choose the appropriate communications port
  57.        NOTE:  If you selected the "Hayes Optima 288 V.34 + FAX + VOICE
  58.               with ESP Card" you must select your ESP communications port
  59.     H) Select
  60.         NEXT
  61.         FINISH

  63.     Your modem is now setup for Windows 95.  This driver automatically
  64.     sets the port speed for your modem to 115,200 bit/s if you select 
  65.     either of the first two Hayes Optima modems.  This speed maximizes
  66.     the performance of your modem for the most common serial
  67.     port in modern computers. (A serial port using a 16550 UART)
  68.  
  69.     If you have a slower serial port (such as one using a 16450 UART), 
  70.     you may need to adjust your port speed slower.  This can be 
  71.     accomplished through the Windows 95 Control Panel.

  73.     If you have a Hayes ESP card, you can select the "Hayes Optima 288
  74.     V.34 + FAX + VOICE with ESP Card".  This automatically sets your 
  75.     modem speed to 230,400 bit/s for maximum performance with the Hayes
  76.     ESP Communications Accelerator. This modem driver can ONLY be used
  77.     with the Hayes ESP card.  Without this enhanced serial port you will
  78.     not be able to communicate with the modem at this speed.  You will 
  79.     need to set your port speed slower.

  81.     Please refer to the TROUBLE SHOOTING section of your Online 
  82.     Reference Guide for assistance in identifying any complications in 
  83.     modem setup or operation.

  85. 3)  Voice-Data Switch
  86.     -------------------------
  87.  
  88.     The external OPTIMA Business Modems contain a Voice-Data
  89.     switch located on the top right front of the modem.  This
  90.     allows two users of external OPTIMA Business Modems to
  91.     toggle between a voice and data call without losing the
  92.     connection.  This can be useful if the need to transmit
  93.     data arises during a voice call.  The following process can
  94.     be used to accomplish voice-data toggling with two external
  95.     OPTIMA Business Modems:
  96.        
  97.     A) Establish a voice call in which each party is talking using
  98.        a telephone handset connected to the back of an external
  99.        OPTIMA Business Modem.

  101.     B) Make sure one of the modems is set for auto-answer (ATS0=1)
  102.  
  103.     C) Both parties press their voice-data switch and a data
  104.        connection will be established
  105.  
  106.     D) Each party can now type to each other via a terminal program
  107.        or upload a file from one computer to the other
  108.  
  109.     E) To re-establish the voice call, one party should press the
  110.        voice-data switch, the VO LED will begin flashing on the other
  111.        modem and a ring can be heard through the modem's speaker.
  112.        This alerts the other user to press the voice-data switch and
  113.        the voice connection is re-established.

  115.     F) The two parties can re-initiate the above process as many times
  116.        as necessary during any given call.

  118. 4)  Speakers or Microphone
  119.     -------------------------
  120.  
  121.     The Hayes OPTIMA Business modem contains both an external speaker
  122.     and an external microphone jack.
  123.  
  124.        Most amplified or non-amplified speakers can be connected
  125.        to the speaker output jack to provide higher quality playback
  126.        of your messages.  The modem speaker will automatically be
  127.        silent during message playback if external speakers are connected.
  128.  
  129.        It is not unusual for only one speaker (of a pair) to be driven
  130.        by the external speaker jack.  The external speaker jack is
  131.        designed for mono output and will only drive one speaker of most
  132.        speaker systems.  An adapter can be found at some electronic stores
  133.        to drive two stereo speakers with a mono source if desired.

  135.        The Microphone input jack can utilize most 500-600 Ohm dynamic
  136.        microphones or a self-powered electret microphone.

  138.        NOTE:  Most microphones bundled with sound systems are electret
  139.        microphones, however, they are NOT self-powered.  These microphones
  140.        are powered from the sound card and do not work with the external
  141.        microphone jack of the Hayes OPTIMA Business Modem.
